Happy Accidents

jewelry by Gabriella Caspi

Tell us how you entered the world of jewelry.

I have this theory that people who set out to do things don't always start out knowing what they actually are going to be doing, or how it is that they're going to do it in the first place...but if you start from a place of love you can’t go wrong.

I had caught a terrible flu in 2004 and in my waking hours I started rummaging through my old jewelry boxes and random metal findings I had around my apartment...from this the first 7-11 pieces were born. I gave them away as gifts to my close friends. Gift giving is a huge part of how I share love with people.  Before I knew it I had people asking my friends about their necklaces wondering where they could buy one and suddenly I had customers. It was a really special way to begin this chapter.

When creating jewelry, what is your favorite part of that process?

There’s so much to love about the craft. Creating off of instinct is easily one of my favorites because i let my intuition lead. I love digging at an antique market and suddenly find something really special, even if it’s just an inch of broken chain or an old rosary that has some rust on it because i know it will help me tell a story. I love finding beauty in forgotten and or broken things. If i see the good i appreciate it, regardless of the rest. My most cherished part of the experience of making jewelry is the love i can feel being channeled into this pieces with my hands knowing that they will find love in the right home.

What material do you work with when creating your pieces?

I use an array of materials — anything really. Examples could include glass, plastic, stainless steel, silver, gold plated chain, gold chain, brass, copper, silk chord, beads (some stone, some crystal). I am creatively led by what feels good in my hands and spirit and let my eyes do the rest. I don’t ever know for sure what it is going to look like until it’s finished.

What is your favorite style of jewelry to make?

For me, the things we wear around our necks become our talismans, they say quietly who we are to us and to the world, they are the piece we roll around in our fingers when we need reminding, safety, courage, and calm...the pieces I make reflect that...they are one of a kind as are every single one of us, wear yours knowing that it was created with intention and love.

If I wanted a special piece commissioned, how would one go about getting that made?

Please do not hesitate to contact me via email so we can begin discussing your creative vision and how I can make it a reality!
